Primary Local Ranking Questions:

When deciding how to proceed with local rankings and SEO silo structures you must first decide what is your focus. Are you trying to rank for:

1. A Product?
2. A Service?
3. A Local?
4. A combination of Local and Product/Service?
5. Multiple Locales?

Product Root Domain With Single or Mutliple Local Ranking Targets

For example there are many ways to organize a silo structure based on your primary focus. You also need to be very clear about the intended SIZE of your local silo site and/or your local silo directory.

For instance, you could follow the following URL structure if your primary domain is "product-centric" but your want to bring local rankings and traffic to your product at a local level or multiple locales:

product.mysite.com/state/city/burb

Local Destination Root Domain With Single or Mutliple Product Ranking Targets

locale.mysite.com/product/details

How Do I Handle A Structure That Needs To Be 5 Levels Deep?

Question:

Is this a good way to organize my 5 level deep

home->silo->category->supporting->sub-supporting

or more specifically

example: wine>red wine>merlot>bejoux merlot?

Answer:

Well, consider wine.mysite.com/red wine/merlot/bejoux merlot
... or just consider taking wine out of the mix as there are only a handful of wine types.

if you are wanting to get into sub-supporting articles you need to rethink your strategy.

Best SEO Practices for Sites with Multiple Locations?

Question:

I'm really hoping I can get an answer to this question. It is something my team and I have been trying to figure out a best practice for but we don't agree.

First, we have a delivery company in San Diego. We optimized their home page for their keywords and added in some San Diego location modifiers and put their location in the footer. Now they are opening another location in LA and we are not sure what the best practices would be to optimize for that second page. Should we take the location out of the footer and build out a location page for LA and San Diego and then make the home page general instead of optimized for San Diego. Any help you could give would be beyond appreciated.

Second:
If we have a site with multiple locations and we are building it from scratch what is the best practices for setting that up. I might be able to figure that out based on the answer above.

Thank you for the help.
